Expert Review and User Praise for the eHealth App: Simple and Convenient

Launched just a few months ago, the eHealth mobile app is receiving increasingly positive feedback from its main users – patients and their umbrella organisations. This solution developed by the Centre of Registers together with its partners was recently awarded a prestigious prize in the national digital innovation competition ‘Digital Book Carrier’ (Lith.: ‘Skaitmeninis knygnešys’) and gained the right to represent Lithuania in the global World Summit Awards.

The eHealth mobile app was launched at the end of March and has so far been downloaded by around 65,000 people from the official Google Play and App Store mobile app stores. The mobile app has been developed by the main operator of the eHealth system, the Centre of Registers, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the patient community.

In the final of the Digital Book Carrier – WSA Lithuania 2025 competition held in Lithuania in June this year, the eHealth app was recognised as the best in the Health and Wellbeing category and won one of the eight tickets to the global World Summit Awards 2025, where it will be able to compete with entrants from around the world.

The World Summit Awards, sponsored by the United Nations, aim to discover meaningful digital innovations in different parts of the world that creatively and innovatively address specific societal or community challenges, and to bring these success stories and experiences to a global audience, enabling the transfer of experience and knowledge between countries, regions and people around the world.

App Aims to Simplify the eHealth System

App users usually highlight the convenience and simplicity of the mobile app among the positive aspects. These two main objectives were pursued by transforming the complex and data-rich eHealth system into a clear and simple mobile app that fits in everyone’s pocket.

“Until now, everyone could find basic information about doctor’s appointments, see e-prescriptions issued or book an appointment with a doctor in the patient section of esveikata.lt. From now on, all this information will be even easier to access – the mobile app has been developed in such a way that patients will be able to find all the information they need as easily as possible,” said Adrijus Jusas, Director General of the Centre of Registers.

The eHealth mobile app makes it easy for patients to find information about past and future appointments with doctors (when they have booked their appointment through the System of Patient Appointment Management (IPR), active referrals, medical certificates, e-prescriptions and their entire health history, and allows them to book an appointment quickly and conveniently.

“The eHealth mobile app is one of the tools and real steps to make it easier and more convenient for patients to access services when booking appointments. It should contribute to a more transparent view of patients’ queues, as well as reduce bureaucratic work for medical staff. The modernisation of eHealth is one of our ambitions, aimed at easing the administrative burden on doctors and simplifying the way for patients to receive services,” said Minister of Health Marija Jakubauskienė.

Praised by Users for Its Simplicity and Convenience

User-friendliness and simplicity are at the heart of every mobile app. Whether it is ordering food to your home, buying plane tickets or performing complex banking transactions, we want quick and easy solutions.

Patient organisations also praise the simplicity and usability of the eHealth app. Dovilė Byčienė, Head of the Association Diabeto IQ, which unites the community of people with diabetes, says that the functionality of the app meets the expectations of the community.

“The new eHealth app is very easy and convenient to use – you don’t need to log in each time, just one password is used. The app’s easy and user-friendly design is intuitive for older users and people with visual impairments. With just two clicks, you can select the person you represent or act for. In addition, it is convenient to watch for newly available appointment slots,” said the Head of Diabeto IQ.

During one of the app’s development phases, a trial version of the app was created and presented to a limited number of users. Various patient organisations were invited to test it and give their feedback and suggestions. One of the organisations actively involved in the testing phase of the app was the Lithuanian Cancer Patient Coalition (POLA).

“POLA supports this eHealth app initiative. It is a convenient and simplified tool for booking an appointment with a healthcare institution,” said Fausta Šimonėlytė, lawyer of the organisation.

She hopes that in the future, the functionality of the app could be extended to inform patients about available appointments.

“We would also encourage healthcare institutions to publish as many available appointment slots as possible, so that the app could better meet patients’ expectations. We notice that people in our community, patients, tend to use their phones and tablets instead of computers, so there is a real need for such apps,” added the POLA representative.

Behind the Scenes of App Development

The Centre of Registers is responsible for maintaining and developing two dozen registers and information systems of national importance. The eHealth system is the largest in terms of its complexity, amount of data and interfaces with other systems, not only among the systems maintained by the Centre of Registers, but also at the national level.

According to Domantas Ozerenskis, Head of the eHealth Division of the Centre of Registers, the development of any software, including mobile applications, starts with an idea. The first step is to define what you want to achieve, what problems you want to solve, and what new opportunities you want to create for users. Once the idea is clear and the objectives are set, a detailed analysis of the work to be done is carried out, as well as programming and testing.

The main idea behind the development of the eHealth mobile app was to concentrate the user’s health information as much as possible, and to make it as easy to access and understand as possible. Obviously, we should remember to ensure the security of all this sensitive information,” said Ozerenskis.

According to him, during the development of the app, several challenges had to be addressed: how to simplify complex medical processes as much as possible, taking into account various exceptions and nuances, how to ensure the performance of the mobile app in the presence of huge amounts of eHealth data, and how to ensure comprehensive data protection without sacrificing the convenience of the user.

“The eHealth system is one of the largest systems in Lithuania, with a huge and rapidly growing amount of data. Thus, the first step was to ensure acceptable speed for the mobile application. For this purpose, specific, narrowly focused integration interfaces have been implemented, which are designed to extract, combine and present very specific data,” he added.

All Your Health Data, Right in Your Pocket

Using the eHealth mobile app is easy: simply download the free app (search for ‘esveikata’) from one of the mobile app stores (Google Play or App Store), and log in to your Patient Portal using one of the authentication tools to verify your identity.

Once logged in, patients can book an appointment with a GP or specialist, view scheduled or historical appointments, view active and used or expired referrals, access and download, if needed, existing medical certificates, and view e-prescriptions.

In addition, the available calendar allows you to track upcoming doctor appointments, scheduled vaccination dates, and see past appointments with healthcare facilities or visits to pharmacies.

The app also conveniently provides access to the patient’s entire health history from the past few years: appointments with doctors, extracts of medical documents or referrals, vaccination records, laboratory test orders or test results, a person’s compulsory health check card, a driver’s health check medical certificate, and a child’s health certificates (both from a GP and a dentist).

The mobile eHealth application allows you to easily switch to the patient portals of represented persons (children or by proxy or power of attorney). It is also easy to create a representation for someone else, manage your profile and update your contact details.
