Cross-Border eHealth Services

Movement of health data between Lithuania and other European countries

Travellers, business clients, exchange students and others from the European Union and the European Economic Area (EU/EEA) travelling to another country may need healthcare in the country they are visiting or staying in. In addition to language barriers, the limited exchange of personal medical information between health system infrastructures in foreign countries can be a barrier to the smooth provision of health services.

The main purpose of a cross-border eHealth service is to provide two services related to health data:

  • Cross-Border e-Prescription Service allows patients to buy medicinal products from a pharmacy in another EU/EEA country. Information on medicinal products bought is transmitted to the country where the e-prescription is issued.
  • Cross-Border Patient Summary Service (currently under development) allows a health professional in another EU/EEA country to see a summary of a patient’s most important medical data, and to provide this information in the healthcare professional’s native language.

Cross-border digital health services for e-prescription and patient summary are gradually being rolled out in many EU/EEA countries. You can find out about changes to services in the countries providing them on the European Commission’s eHealth Network and Cross-border EU/EEA services websites.

Healthcare data is exchanged on a secure data exchange platform overseen by the European Commission. Patients’ data is processed and stored in accordance with current EU legislation and current practices in your country of residence and travel.

Lithuanian patients may opt out of data sharing by logging in to their personal patient account. Read more about your rights in the patient information leaflets.

Patient Information Notices (PIN)

The processing of patient personal data when using cross-border electronic health services is described in the Patient Information Notices (PINs).

Cross-border healthcare services can be identified by the label MyHealth@EU
